Job Summary: Trail crew members and leads are involved in evaluating horse trails, corrals, and facilities for safety issues and reporting deficiencies to management. Responsibilities include the care and maintenance of horses, mules, equipment, and tools, while adhering to company safety guidelines and ensuring environmentally friendly trail maintenance. Requirements

  • Advanced horsemanship and packing skills.
  • Hand tool safety, proficient in the use of hand tools and chainsaws.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of Yellowstone facilities and services.
  • Knowledge of Company and Department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
  • Must weigh 240 pounds or less for wranglers, lead wranglers, trail crew and 280 pounds or less for stagecoach/teams-wagon drivers.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Must be able to mount and dismount horse without assistance.
  • Must be able to work in a high-altitude environment.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to speak and project voice for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather (including rain, sleet, snow, direct sunlight, high winds, and temperatures ranging from 0 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work with large, domestic animals in a corral/ranch setting and capable of riding horses up to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use chemicals for cleaning or animal care.

Nice To Haves

  • Limited experience in low impact resource development is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluating assigned horse trails, corrals and facilities for unsafe conditions and reporting any deficiencies to Trail Crew Lead and corral management.
  • Responsible for the care, maintenance, and security of assigned horses, mules, equipment and tools.
  • Responsible for understanding and following all company safety guidelines.
  • Maintains assigned horse trails in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
  • Inspections and reporting of any needed maintenance of Horse Department equipment and tack.
  • Provide functional guidance to the Horse Trail Maintenance Crew. Assigned duties include repair, rehabilitation and maintenance of assigned horse trails, corrals and facilities.
  • Helping to evaluate assigned horse trails, corrals and facilities for unsafe conditions and reporting any deficiencies to management
  • Interacts with Horse Program Manager, Head Wranglers, and NPS personnel to maintain assigned trails in optimal condition.
  • Assisting in the general welfare of stock including grooming, feeding and cleaning stalls and reporting any suspected health issues of the animals.
  • Maintains assigned horse trails in a safe and environmentally friendly manner along with specific guidelines set forth by the National Park Service.
  • Train assigned employees in trail maintenance techniques and mule packing techniques
