About The Position

This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Homewood Mountain Resort, set on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Homewood, California. Homewood Mountain Resort is seeking a Summer Trail Crew Operator to join the Trail Crew Department. Job Summary: The Summer Trail Crew Operator performs daily mountain road and trail maintenance and improvements. The Operator focuses on but not limited to trail building and maintenance, re-vegetation, erosion control, brush cutting, timber harvest, and general mountain clean up. The Operator may use heavy equipment such as but not limited to, loaders, dozers, excavators, dump trucks, ski steers, and forklifts.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate strong communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and perform physically demanding work for extended periods outdoors on uneven terrain
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including varying hours and conditions
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Capable of frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and other physical movements
  • Able to work at high elevations for extended periods
  • Comfortable standing and walking for long durations
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in all mountain weather conditions
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Physical agility and balance required to hike and work on ski slopes
  • Open to training on both light and heavy equipment operation
  • Ability to hike while carrying up to 50 lbs, including backpack-mounted equipment
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, safety, and professionalism

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating and maintaining chainsaws in high alpine environments and proper chain saw etiquette preferred
  • Prior experience with heavy equipment operation preferred
  • Previous trail maintenance experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with Homewood Mountain Resort’s trail system preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily maintenance and improvement of mountain roads and trails
  • Build and maintain trails, including erosion control and re-vegetation efforts
  • Conduct brush cutting, timber harvesting, and general mountain cleanup
  • Load and unload re-vegetation supplies; distribute seed and fertilizer
  • Perform vegetation management tasks such as skidding and tree removal
  • Safely operate heavy equipment, including loaders, dozers, excavators, dump trucks, skid steers, forklifts, and similar machinery
  • Operate mowing equipment to maintain trails and surrounding land
  • Maintain and properly care for tools and equipment
  • Operate light-duty equipment safely, such as mulchers, chainsaws, string trimmers, brush cutters, hand saws, and various manual tools
  • Perform physically demanding tasks such as hiking, digging, cutting, and clearing vegetation
  • Follow directions from supervisors and provide guidance to team members when needed
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members and supervisors
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work environment
  • Demonstrate reliability through punctuality, accountability, and strong work ethic
