The Traffic Control Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices throughout the City. This position operates a wide variety of tools and equipment to erect and maintain traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, street lights, and electronic message boards to ensure safe and efficient transportation for the community. Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in traffic signal maintenance, street maintenance, or related experience required.
  • Job-relevant certification/license, vocational/technical program completion, or completion of apprenticeship preferred.
  • Class B CDL required within 180 days of employment
  • Valid driver’s license required upon hire
  • Certifications within 180 days of employment required: IMSA Workzone TTC, Signs and Markings 1, Signal Technician 1.
  • Bucket Truck Certification
  • Forklift Certification
  • General understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as well as traffic laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, materials, equipment, and terminology used in construction and maintenance of street and traffic control facilities.
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, and customers by telephone, in writing and in person.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work, as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of general computer programs and applications, including email and mobile apps.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals and traffic signs; fabricate new traffic signs as needed.
  • Investigate complaints and reports of signal malfunctions; perform minor adjustments and repairs.
  • Establish and maintain proper work zones, including warning devices and barricades, to ensure traffic control and crew safety.
  • Utilize computer software to design and produce signage; stay informed of updates and revisions to traffic control device standards.
  • Assist with striping and pavement markings on city streets and parking lots.
  • Maintain and repair large, portable LED message boards.
  • Maintain detailed records of signs installed, modified, or relocated for inventory tracking purposes.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of street lights and solar panels.
  • Operate underground utility locating equipment to ensure City electric and fiber lines are properly marked prior to excavation.
  • Monitor sign and paint inventory and assist with budget-related tracking.
  • Respond to winter storm operations on a 24-hour on-call basis, including snow plowing and salt spreading to maintain safe road conditions.
