About The Position

This position directly contributes to the Department’s mission towards our Target Zero goal. Our mission is to continually improve the safety of Florida's traveling public and FDOT employees by reducing transportation related fatalities and severe injury crashes to zero. This position investigates location specific and conducts systemic safety analyses to identify safety improvement needs and design countermeasures to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.  In addition, it also collaborates with education, enforcement, and emergency services to increase the effectiveness of our engineering efforts. Lastly, it works with communities to identify and help resolve traffic safety concerns.

  • A high school diploma and four years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and has an Engineer in Trainee (EIT) certification in either Florida or another State; or An active International Municipal and Signal Association (IMSA) Sign and Pavement Marking certification.
  • An associate of arts or science degree in computer science, engineering technology, or similar relevant area of study can substitute for two years of the required experience.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, computer science, engineering technology or similar relevant area of study can substitute for four years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review engineering reports and studies. This includes preparing and disseminating the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) tracking reports, study documentation and presentation of findings and conclusions, analysis of engineering data, and coordination of resources necessary to produce reports.
  • Develop and manage professional and contractual service contracts, and other types of agreements, that support traffic operations. This includes project management responsibilities associated with procuring contracts, issuing task work orders, reviewing contract deliverables, reviewing and processing invoices, coordinating Department personnel and other agencies associated with work under the contract, preparing contract correspondence, maintaining project files, and actively participating in project meetings.
  • Participate in meetings, on committees, task teams and other groups with internal and external customers to represent traffic engineering interests. Includes, providing useful commentary and review of work products as well as developing correspondence and follow-up contact as needed.
  • Assist the District Traffic Safety Program Engineer with coordinating project production with the Department’s Work Program. This includes coordinating with the district’s Work Program Unit so that project schedule and control can be efficiently managed. Assist with the development and coordination of the District's safety work program.
  • Assist Traffic Safety Program Engineer in implementing business and related plans to guide resource allocation and achieve unit performance targets. Includes collaborating with others in plan development, reporting plan results, linking performance targets to SMART (Specific, measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) objectives in staff expectations, and identifying and making resource recommendations.
  • Addresses complaints/concerns for safety and bicycle/pedestrian issues and requests for information from internal and external customers.
  • Assists with the implementation and management of the Safe Routes To School (SRTS) program.
