About The Position

Under general supervision, to install, maintain, and repair all types of traffic signals and any other electronic or electric traffic control devices; and to do related work as required. The Traffic Signal Technician is the journey-level position responsible for the installation, maintenance and repairs of traffic signals and other electronic or electrical traffic control devices. It is distinguished from the next higher- level classification of Traffic Signal Supervisor in that the latter has overall supervision responsibility over Traffic Signal Technicians. Requirements

  • REQUIRED: California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License with 3 years clean driving record. A clean driving record consists of no violations within 3 years of applying.
  • MUST BE ATTACHED TO RESUME TAB: Official DMV driver license history report showing a clean driving record for the last three years.
  • Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing status of their license at the time of application AND at time of hire.
  • EITHER I Experience: The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience as a Traffic Signal Technician Trainee in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) OR II Education: Graduation from an accredited electrical or electronic trade school. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Experience: The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric and electronic traffic control devices.
  • License: Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.
  • Knowledge of: Electrical and electronic theory.
  • Knowledge of: Tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Knowledge of: Traffic signal installation inspection techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of: Schematics, plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of: Traffic Safety Regulations.
  • Knowledge of: Safe work practices.
  • Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to: Work alone with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to: Work at heights.
  • Ability to: Work on live electrical equipment.
  • Ability to: Distinguish colors.
  • Ability to: Lift 100 lbs. correctly.
  • Ability to: Operate lift vehicle.
  • Ability to: Repair and test electronic equipment.
  • Ability to: Read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to: Supervise the installation of traffic signal systems.
  • Ability to: Operate and maintain a variety of electric and electronic measuring devices.
  • Ability to: Inspect electrical and electronic portions of traffic signal systems installed by private contractors.
  • Special Working Condition: Subject to 24-hour call out.
  • Special Working Condition: Work in all weather conditions.
