About The Position

This position performs technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals. An incumbent in this position may be designated Senior Traffic Signal Technician.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the installation, programming, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal systems.
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, procedures, and practices employed in road sign design, construction, and installation.
  • Knowledge of the design and installation of pavement markings.
  • Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices guidelines.
  • Knowledge of department, county, and GDOT policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of computer and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in reading diagrams and manuals.
  • Skill in the construction and maintenance of road signs and markings.
  • Skill in troubleshooting electrical and other problems with signalized intersections.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Technician and Work Zone certifications within a year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Installs traffic signals at intersections; installs traffic loops and/or signal detectors to include wiring programming rada systems and video monitoring software.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots malfunctions in traffic signal devices; repairs and replaces signal lamps, lenses, and hardware.
  • Installs battery backup systems.
  • Cuts road surfaces for the installation for repair of loops.
  • Conducts traffic counts.
  • Maintains inventory of signals, parts, supplies, and related materials; initiates requisitions for new or replacement inventory; picks up supplies form local vendors.
  • Interprets layouts and wiring diagrams.
  • Tests and measures electrical circuits.
  • Applies and maintains pavement markings on highway lanes, parking lots, intersection, walkways, etc; applies paint and thermoplastic pavement markings; installs raised pavement markings.
  • Replaces LED lights on bridges.
  • Installs or places road barricades, road closing, and detour signs.
  • Maintains records and completes reports.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on call.
  • Performs related duties
