About The Position

The City of High Point is seeking a skilled worker to perform responsible tasks in the repair, maintenance, and installation of traffic signals and related control devices. The work is performed under the regular supervision of a senior technician and involves various essential tasks and responsibilities related to traffic control devices.

Requirements

  • Formal education which includes reading, writing and math.
  • Valid Driver's License in NC or another state.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.

Nice To Haves

  • Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school is preferable.
  • A two-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, electronics or electrical license.
  • Some knowledge and experience in Electrical utility work and knowledge of the trade equipment and materials is preferable.
  • Training in social skills to interact as a team player.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the installation, relocation and maintenance of traffic control devices including controllers, control boxes, conduits, cable ducts, signal heads, signs, bulbs, guy wire, etc.
  • Assists in the installation of traffic lights and repairs damaged lights.
  • Operates an aerial bucket truck.
  • Wires new and old traffic lights.
  • Pulls underground cable, splices and runs cable to controls and lights.
  • Sets and anchors poles.
  • Performs line work in the installation of signals and controls.
  • Sets up, cleans, tests and assists in the repairs and overhaul of controllers, coordinators, clocks, computer interface units, detectors, cameras, parking equipment and other electrical and electronic control equipment in a shop.
  • Hooks up and checks out all new traffic control devices before placing them in operation.
  • Drives a service truck to and from job sites and transports tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Operates a computer to input work reports, check signal malfunctions and download timing plans.
  • Cleans and paints signals, and places brackets on signs.
  • Sets up safety devices in streets for re-routing traffic during times of activity.
  • Troubleshoots traffic signal malfunctions.
  • Performs 24-hour standby for emergency operational assistance as needed.
  • Stocks trucks with required material, supplies and tools.
  • Cleans and repairs tools and equipment.
  • Communicates with supervisor and various other departments, by two-way radio.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
