About The Position

Responsible for installation and maintenance of traffic signal controller devices, interface equipment and performing all functions pertaining to overhead and underground street lighting.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Journey Traffic Signal Maintenance Specialist or State of Michigan licensed Electrician.
  • Must possess International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) levels 1 or 2 certification or obtain 13 months after accepting position.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • If an Internal applicant does not possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class A endorsement, they will be required to pass the Department of Transportation physical exam and State of MI written portion of CDL examination within 15 days of transfer and successfully pass the MI CDL skills/road test within 6 months of the date of internal transfer.
  • External applicants must possess valid CDL with Class A endorsement.
  • Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.
  • Must be able to pass medical requirements for asbestos abatement license.
  • Must be respirator certified.
  • Lifts controllers and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Good visual acuity required to identify wire coding and operate platform/bucket trucks.
  • Must be able to work above street intersection from platform or bucket truck as well as in hand holes.
  • Job functions require considerable standing as well as ability to stoop, bend, twist and climb.
  • Outdoor temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Noise and dust levels may be high at times when working above street intersections.
  • Must work in high traffic areas.
  • Occasional exposure to confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and maintains electrical wiring, components and controls for traffic signal equipment.
  • Works above street intersections as well as some underground handholes.
  • Troubleshoots multi- function fixed, timed, and solid-state traffic control devices.
  • Responsible for adjusting and properly timing traffic signals as necessary.
  • Learns to use and operate all tools and equipment pertaining to overhead and underground streetlighting lines.
  • Identifies and handles all materials and components associated with secondary overhead and underground street lighting lines.
  • Learns to read and interpret various overhead and underground streetlight prints and drawings.
  • Communicates with employees and other departments to assure proper understanding of job procedures, daily activities, and safety procedures, etc.
  • Communicates with customers to promote a positive awareness of BWL responsibility.
  • Drives and operates bucket and platform trucks.
  • Must be willing and able to work standby rotation as required.
  • Follows BWL safety manual and wears required personal protective equipment as required.
  • Attends training for safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Performs other duties as necessitated by job responsibilities.
