About The Position

Under the general direction of the Sign Supervisor, the Traffic Sign Technician I, II, or III performs office, shop, and/or field work to facilitate the maintenance of all streets, safety, traffic, and informational signs County-wide. The difficulty level of work varies with the employee’s classification level. Traffic Sign Technician I is entry level with no experience required performing routine and/or training work, Traffic Sign Technician II has obtained certifications and performs work of moderate difficulty and assist in training Tier I. The Traffic Sign Technician III has obtained additional certifications and supervises technical subordinates in the field and acts in the capacity of the Sign Supervisor when they are on leave or for other short-term needs and performs work of advanced difficulty as outlined below.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be willing to perform strenuous manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Completed requirements for Traffic Sign Technician I.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the public sector for sign installation & repair.
  • FDOT Intermediate Work Zone certification.
  • IMSA Signs and Markings Level, I Certification minimum.
  • Completed requirements for Traffic Sign Technician I & Traffic Sign Technician II.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the public sector for sign installation & repair.
  • IMSA Signs and Markings Level, II Certification minimum.
  • FDOT Advance Work Zone certification.
  • Target Solutions Smart Leadership series or LinkedIn Learning course as directed by Learning and Development.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to be certified on additional equipment, as required.
  • Must be available to work overtime and be on standby or on-call as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Must be able to be on-call after hours on a scheduled and compensated basis.
  • Night work may be required when on 24-hour call.
  • Fabricate, install, maintain, and repair traffic-related devices including regulatory, warning and guide signs according to the MUTCD and FDOT design standards.
  • Maintain required records to account for materials and supplies usage.
  • Maintain required records to account for accurate record of the date, time and location of complete work.
  • Completes assigned maintenance tasks to bring deficient signs up to current standards and regulations, such as, but not limited to, cleaning, straightening, and replacing signs.
  • Install and maintain pavement markings, to include preparing sites for markings and performing pavement marking procedures (Paint and Thermo) for crosswalks, school zones, stop bars, etc.
  • Set up traffic work zones and Road Closures/ Detours, to include traffic barricades, cone transition lanes and traffic warning signs when conducting sign/marking work in traffic areas, which may include high volume and highspeed roadways.
  • Must be able to keep paper and electronic records using a computer, table, to cell phone.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle(s) and assigned work area(s) in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • May be assigned to assist the signal dept. on an as-needed basis with management approval.
  • Acts in the capacity of the Sign Supervisor in their absence if there is no tier III and with Deputy Director’s approval.
  • Ensure that all new tier I employees can properly clean, straighten and replace signs if needed and safely operate on the shoulder and/or right-of-way of the road.
  • Performs inspections and preventive maintenance work on traffic signs and pavement marking by replacing deficient signs up to current standards and regulations, such as, but not limited to, ensuring adequate sight distance around regulatory signs and intersection clearances, cleaning, straightening and replacing signs.
  • Restriping pavement markings to include but not limited to Crosswalks, Stop Bars and SCHOOL message.
  • Supervises technical subordinates in the field when working on a joint project.
  • Maintains warehouse and will assist the Sign Supervisor in reviewing inventories and monitors usage of materials.
  • Assists the Sign Supervisor in investigating complaints and reports of sign or pavement marking issues consults with the Sign Supervisor to determine corrective action.
  • Trains and provides technical guidance to lower technicians on proper sign installation, pavement marking, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Acts in the capacity of the Sign Supervisor in their absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employee’s normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency.
