The Traffic Management Division is responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of all traffic control devices in the City. This includes signs, pavement markings, parking meters, 275 traffic signals and transportation-related technology systems. Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Operations for the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES), the Chief of Traffic Management designs, develops, manages, and implements all initiatives, functions, and activities of the Traffic Management Division. This position serves as a key advisor on strategic, technical, operational, and policy matters, as well as other risks and decisions critical to the Division's and Department's success. The incumbent leads and oversees a diverse team, assigning work, maintaining morale, motivating staff, and enforcing discipline. This position represents the division and department in meetings, presentations, and coordination efforts with City leadership, staff, the Police Department, consultants, contractors, material suppliers, and other stakeholders to advance the City's strategic goals. The Chief Engineer may also manage related teams or be assigned special projects, provided the responsibilities align with the level of the position. This role is subject to 24-hour callback during emergencies and may respond to citizen inquiries after hours via phone, text, or email.
