About The Position

The Traffic Operations Crew Leader oversees, coordinates, and actively participates in the maintenance, installation, and repair of the City of South Fulton’s traffic control infrastructure, including traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and right‑of‑way safety devices. This position serves as the lead worker for assigned crews, ensuring safe work practices, high‑quality workmanship, accurate documentation, and timely completion of operational tasks. This classification will lead, oversee, and participate in all phases of traffic sign, signal, and marking maintenance and installation assignments; perform the more difficult and complex duties within the function when needed; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in Signal Operations, Sign Maintenance, Markings on the road, Right of Way infrastructure, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Knowledge of MUTCD standards, traffic sign fabrication, marking installation, and signal maintenance.
  • Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery, requiring the monitoring, adjustment, regulation, and/or setting of multiple conditions.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
  • Lead worker concepts and practices, including training and scheduling of staff.
  • Operations, services, and activities of a traffic control sign and road marking program.
  • Methods, techniques, materials, equipment, and tools used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of street and traffic signs, markings, and related traffic signal systems.
  • Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

  • This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as the ability to exert medium physical effort in light to medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (10 - 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Essential functions are sometimes performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns daily tasks, deploys crew members, and oversees field activities to ensure efficient operations and timely project completion.
  • Provides input for performance evaluations, trains employees, and mentors staff.
  • Reviews completed work for quality, compliance with standards, and adherence to MUTCD practices.
  • Participates in the construction, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signals and control devices.
  • Performs diagnostics on signal malfunctions, wiring, detectors, and communication systems.
  • Installs, fabricates, replaces, and repairs traffic control signs using proper mounting systems and safety methods.
  • Oversees roadway striping, raised pavement markers, and specialty marking installation.
  • Design and set up safe and effective traffic control, including street barricades and cones, before the performance of activities to ensure public and worker safety through work zones; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Directs and controls traffic as required.
  • Identify and prepare supplies and equipment needed for each assigned project; install and repair signs as needed.
  • Coordinates daily work activities; organizes and prioritizes project tasks; makes work assignments and evaluates work; monitors the status of work; troubleshoots problem situations; performs the duties of a supervisor in the absence of the same.
