We are seeking an intern to join our successful Intelligent Mobility Infrastructure Group which consists of Traffic Engineering Design, ITS/CAV, and related traffic engineering services. This group is responsible for conducting corridor studies, signal and ITS designs, traffic impact studies, pavement marking designs, corridor signal timing, work zone traffic control planning and design, traffic safety and other specialized traffic analysis work. The chosen candidate will work up to 40 hours per week during the summer and/or part-time hours during the school year. Please note the internship will require working onsite at the Chicago, IL or Minneapolis, MN office. This position provides a great opportunity to become familiar with industry standard traffic engineering practices and expand your coursework knowledge to real life projects. You will be paired with one/more senior member in the group to assist in different projects which not only will help you to develop your technical skills but also to build internal connections and network. Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a civil engineering program or closely related field.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Students with 1-3 semesters remaining to complete their engineering degree are desired / preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and technical writing ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive within a cooperative team atmosphere.

Nice To Haves

  • Passion for emerging transportation technologies and trends, as well as multimodal transportation including car, pedestrian, bicycle, and transit modes is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptual, preliminary, and final design task.
  • Intersection control evaluations.
  • Signal and roundabout justification reports.
  • Traffic signal design tasks.
  • Signing and pavement markings design.
  • Work zone traffic control.
  • Detour signing.
  • Asset management.
  • Data collection and processing.
  • Utilize various software applications, including word processing and spreadsheets, while working directly with traffic engineering tools such as Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, RODEL, SignCAD, OpenRoads Designer, and AutoCAD to perform design, analysis, and project coordination.
