About The Position

The Traffic Engineer V position at the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is a pivotal role within the Complete Streets Section, focusing on the planning, design, and implementation of infrastructure projects aimed at improving traffic safety, enhancing pedestrian accessibility, expanding cycling infrastructure, and strengthening public transit systems. This position is integral to advancing key initiatives such as the Chicago Cycling Strategy and the Better Streets for Buses Plan, as well as contributing to CDOT's overall traffic safety strategy. Under general supervision, the Traffic Engineer V will oversee construction and renovation projects related to street and road design, as well as the regulation and flow of traffic. The role involves preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering design plans for various infrastructure projects, including those for bicycles, pedestrians, and transit systems. The engineer will also serve as a project engineer, supervising and participating in roadway field surveys to collect essential data on traffic patterns, volumes, speeds, capacities, traffic crashes, and parking. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Traffic Engineer V will review and design traffic signal timing sequences using specialized computer software, ensuring that all plans comply with established design standards and specifications. The engineer will develop transportation and urban design policies, guidelines, and best management practices, while also overseeing the work of engineering contractors to ensure adherence to contract specifications. This position requires effective communication and coordination with various stakeholders, including contractors, government agencies, and the public, to facilitate successful project execution and community engagement.
