About The Position

RK&K is seeking an experienced Traffic Design Project Engineer with expertise in traffic control device design (signing, pavement marking, traffic signals, etc), lighting, temporary traffic control and ITS. This role supports high-impact projects through open-end contracts with state and local agencies, focusing on traffic control device design, MUTCD compliance, temporary traffic control and ITS system deployment. You'll help shape and implement strategies that improve operations and integrate emerging technologies. Collaborate with a talented, multidisciplinary team using state-of-the-art tools to deliver meaningful results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related
  • Active Professional Engineer License (P.E.)
  • Seven (7) – Ten (10) years of progressive experience in traffic engineering design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills and public speaking
  • Problem-solving and analytical abilities, with the ability to use data and research to inform decision making
  • Strong knowledge of traffic control devices, work zone traffic control strategies, safety strategies, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other relevant standards and regulations
  • Familiarity with state and local traffic engineering standards
  • Proficient in using traffic engineering software and tools such as MicroStation, GuideSIGN, AGI32, etc.
  • Growing leadership qualities and the ability to mentor younger Traffic Engineers

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with project management and coordination
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
  • Experience with Synchro/SimTraffic

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement traffic engineering strategies and solutions to optimize transportation systems, including traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, intersection design, planning studies, and much more
  • Prepare documentation and design plans for traffic control devices, including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control, lighting, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS)
  • Present to clients and public stakeholders
  • Support projects for all modes of travel including highway, bus, rail, bicycle and pedestrian in urban, suburban and rural environments
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in traffic engineering practices, technology and industry trends
  • Prepare technical reports and quality control reviews to ensure accuracy and integrity of engineering deliverables
  • Review and develop maintenance of traffic plans for projects that includes consideration for workers, vehicles, and vulnerable road users
  • You will perform traffic engineering research to identify and analyze work zone traffic control and traffic control device methodologies, principals, products, and applications
  • Create traffic control device and work zone policies, guidelines, trainings, and engineering standards to improve design, implementation, and operations to enhance safety and efficiency
  • Planning, design, and implementation of ITS applications to implement technology to improve operations
