About The Position

TSU (Tree Service Unlimited, Inc.) is a leader in quality utility line clearing services, vegetation management, emergency disaster response, and wood debris management solutions for utility networks. TSU is headquartered in the capital of California, Sacramento. Our goal is to continue strategizing with large utility companies and agencies to better secure the power grid in the event of disaster while maintaining hazard-free lines from wildfires. The Traffic Control Technician is responsible for directing the safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic through utility, vegetation‑management, and construction work zones. This role supports field crews by implementing Caltrans‑compliant temporary traffic control plans and maintaining safety for the traveling public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to pass a background check as required by utility or project contracts.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions, memos, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and communicate clearly with field crews and the public.
  • Strong situational awareness and ability to recognize unsafe traffic conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • California Flagger Certification (Caltrans‑approved) — preferred at hire but required before assignment to a flagging station.
  • Willingness to work overtime, nights, weekends, and all weather conditions.
  • Dependable and able to commit to long shifts when necessary.
  • Courteous and professional with the traveling public.

Responsibilities

  • Review traffic-routing plans and control‑point locations with the supervisor prior to deployment.
  • Assist with installation of the approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) plan.
  • Designate flaggers and coordinate traffic release timing at lane closures or alternating traffic points.
  • Execute safe turning movements at designated turnaround areas at the end of control zones.
  • Monitor traffic‑control devices to ensure proper placement, visibility, and effectiveness in preventing unsafe queueing.
  • Communicate with cutting crews to manage traffic holds and releases per operational time limits.
  • Apply CA MUTCD‑based best practices for Temporary Lane Closures, including understanding each TTC section and the purpose of each device.
  • Place Advance Warning Signs in correct order, distance, and orientation.
  • Maintain proper safe‑positioning of flagger stations in accordance with Caltrans guidelines.
  • Use hand signals, STOP/SLOW paddles, and communication tools correctly to alert and guide motorists.
  • Understand safe stopping distance and sight‑distance requirements for assigned roadway conditions.
  • Maintain California‑approved Flagger Certification.
  • Maintain proof of certification on site when performing flagging duties (required by Caltrans).
  • Follow all safety procedures, hazard reporting, and equipment-use guidelines.
  • Report potentially unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Follow all company policies, union rules, and performance expectations.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs evolve.
