of
the
National
Park
Service
workforce
while
addressing
critical
maintenance
needs
by
providing
professional
experiences
in
technical
fields
to
students
and
recent
graduates.

Requirements

• Interest in historic preservation and continuing into a career in the field
• Age restrictions: 18 - 30 (or 35 for Veterans)
• Must be able to commit to the project for 26 weeks
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
• Interest in using hand and power tools in an outdoor setting to complete projects
• Ability to commute to project site daily
• Follow all safety rules and regulations and participate in ongoing safety culture of the site.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass the DOI Background Check
• This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Responsibilities

• Build Up participant will be working with the park’s Resource Management team and Preservation Maintenance team on material testing, project planning, technical writing and drafting, weekly reporting, documentation using photography and field notes, condition assessments, and other preservation work efforts for planned projects at Fort Pulaski. Trades work for the projects will be primarily completed by the park’s Preservation Maintenance Team, and intern will be supporting projects with technical assistance.
• Planned projects will include masonry, carpentry, woodwork, plaster, metal, and painting of historic structures and elements inside Fort Pulaski. The work will include preservation, replacement, repair, and removal of historic fabric.
• The Build Up participant will also assist the Resource Management team in their conservation work on original fort doors including documentation, reporting, testing, and other technical work. Participant may also assist with cleaning, wood and iron treatment, and other methods of conservation.
• The participant will work directly with park Exhibits Specialist and Engineering Technician on scheduling and outlining annual deferred maintenance tasks with park recreational fee revenue.
• Inventorying tools and equipment
• Light custodial and site management assistance including dusting and tidying up areas
• Covering and protecting materials and building components from harsh elements during weather events
• Assisting members of the visiting public with directions and site information while working on projects.
