About The Position

The Trades Specialist Locksmith position at SUNY Brockport involves supervising and training subordinate staff, providing work assignments based on management priorities, and ensuring that schedules, standards, and guidelines are met. The role includes manufacturing keys, working with small format interchangeable core key systems, and having a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in locksmithing. The specialist will also provide estimates for locks, keys, and door hardware, manage inventory control, and review project proposals related to locking mechanisms. Troubleshooting and diagnosing electric door operators and performing repairs and installations are also key responsibilities. The position requires climbing, stooping, and moderate to heavy lifting, and may involve overtime on short notice.

Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in locksmithing under a skilled tradesperson.
  • Experience with Best Keystone 600 key management software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing electronic card-access systems.
  • Locksmith experience at a large institution such as a college campus.
  • Ability to work both scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
  • Must be able to obtain Operations and Maintenance certification for asbestos removal.
  • Possess a valid New York State Driver License, Class D or above.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and trains subordinate staff, e.g. Maintenance Assistant or Helper.
  • Manufactures keys and is well versed in small format interchangeable core key systems.
  • Cuts keys, pins up cores, and manages master key systems.
  • Provides estimates of time and materials for locks, keys, and door hardware.
  • Manages key and door hardware inventory control.
  • Reviews and approves project and capital plan proposals related to locking mechanisms.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses electric door operators and sliding doors.
  • Repairs and installs electric strikes.
  • Performs carpentry tasks related to lock and key systems.
  • Conducts weekly vehicle checks to ensure readiness.
  • Reads and interprets plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
