About The Position

Under the direction of the Regional Park Maintenance Supervisor, SG-16 or designee, the incumbent will be assigned to the Regional Maintenance Garage. The incumbent will be required to perform a wide range of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to: performing tasks in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment such as service and adjustment of brakes, replacement of wheel bearings, and the removal and replacement of such components as starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, gas tanks, exhaust system components, shock absorbers, springs, and radiators. The position also involves performing engine repairs as well as tune-ups according to manufacturer's specifications, executing minor and major mechanical repairs, operating departmental equipment, and maintaining daily activity reports.

Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in motor equipment under a skilled tradesperson.
  • Possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake and tanker endorsements.
  • Obtain certification by the Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct NYS vehicle inspections.
  • Working knowledge of practices and techniques of making mechanical and electrical repairs.
  • Ability to make accurate diagnoses of mechanical or electrical problems.
  • Ability to use tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Ability to supervise others and act independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices.
  • Physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Service and adjust brakes, replace wheel bearings, and remove and replace components such as starters and fuel pumps.
  • Perform engine repairs and tune-ups according to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Execute minor and major mechanical repairs.
  • Operate departmental equipment including light duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Perform welding using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment.
  • Perform heavy lifting and materials handling.
  • Maintain daily activity reports and other required written records.
  • Adhere to the agency's Code of Conduct Policy.
