About The Position

The Lead Tractor Shop Mechanic is responsible for overseeing and performing advanced mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance (PMs), and diagnostics on Shaw Industries' Equipment Fleet, primarily on the tractor fleet, but may include repairs to the trailer fleet, as well. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, leadership, and the ability to ensure DOT compliance, safety and operational standards. The Lead Tractor Mechanic will provide guidance to other mechanics, ensuring safe, efficient and effective fleet operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a tractor mechanic, with leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations article 396.19 inspector qualification requirements.
  • Current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Current Section 609 EPA Certification or willing to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Current DOT Medical Card.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and perform complex diagnostics, repairs, and PMs on tractors (including straight trucks, yard spotters, day cab and sleeper tractors and light duty vehicle).
  • Lead and mentor Mechanic - Tractor I, II, III & potential entry level team members, providing training and guidance as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with company and federal safety regulations, including DOT requirements.
  • Utilize TMT Fleet Maintenance and Mechanic Workstation software to assign, document, and track repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Prioritize workload to increase throughput of equipment though the shop.
  • Properly use and maintain all shop tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments including lifts, crane, jack, jack stands, wheel dollies, ramps, DPF cleaner, lift truck, ladders etc.
  • Must be proficient in the safe effective use of electric welders & cutting torches.
  • Utilize diagnostic computers to leverage any ECM updates, faults and CEL.
  • Perform component part replacements and system repairs, including but not limited to: air brake systems, electrical charging and starting systems, lighting and cooling systems, steering, hydraulic, and refrigeration systems.
  • Conduct complete brake system rebuilds and ensure proper performance post-repair.
  • Change pre-mounted tires and perform vehicle alignment checks.
  • Test drive vehicles to confirm repairs are completed effectively and safely.
  • Respond to service calls as necessary, providing emergency roadside assistance for fleet vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, following housekeeping and hazard management protocols.
  • Assist in procurement of parts and supplies, ensuring proper inventory levels.
