About The Position

The Track Worker position at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) involves performing routine maintenance and repairs on train tracks to ensure the safety and reliability of the light rail system. This role includes inspecting, maintaining, and repairing various components of the track system under supervision, contributing to the overall functionality of the rail infrastructure.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• One year of experience performing inspection, maintenance, and repair of roadbed, ties, rails, frogs, and switches, including welding track and operating heavy equipment.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class A license.

• Mechanical knowledge of track systems and heavy equipment operation.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections of the track system and report any issues needing repair.
• Pick up debris along the right-of-way.
• Tighten track bolts, adjust switches, replace ties, tamp, align track, and lubricate rail and rail curves.
• Spread and clean ballast.
• Install rail, frogs, switches, and ties.
• Operate air compressors and heavy tools and equipment used to maintain and repair track systems.
• Operate hand and power tools.
• Assist in re-railing and loading equipment.
• Keep tools and equipment clean and in good condition.
• Weld track and operate heavy equipment.
• Operate hi-rail trucks, tamper, and other vehicles.
• Act as flag person during operations.
• Inspect for broken welds and broken rail.
• Operate computer for related data input and retrieval.
• Prepare written reports and document defects and repairs on inspection forms or designated computer programs.
• Familiarize other Track Workers with proper job methods.
