About The Position

The Training and Development Specialist VI (Shooting Sports Coordinator) at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is responsible for conducting and coordinating mandatory hunter education programs across Texas. This senior-level position plays a key role in recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) strategies for hunting and shooting sports, while also overseeing the development and evaluation of educational materials and outreach functions. The role requires independent judgment and initiative, as well as collaboration with various partners and stakeholders in the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of experience in Natural Resource Education, Outdoor Recreation, Volunteer Management, or teaching related subjects.
  • One year of experience participating in or hosting competitive firearm shooting events.
  • Valid State driver's license and Hunter Education Certification.
  • Ability to obtain additional certifications within six months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Two years of experience in partnership development and event planning.
  • Experience as a Texas Hunter Education and Bowhunter Education Instructor.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.
  • Experience implementing R3 strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and coordinate mandatory hunter education programs throughout Texas.
  • Develop and modify training design based on analysis of success and instructor input.
  • Handle public inquiries regarding hunter education courses and program requirements.
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of hunter education coursework for students and instructors.
  • Set regional priorities based on goals outlined in the hunter education instructor manual.
  • Assist with goals of subgrantees related to youth hunting and adult learn-to-hunt programs.
  • Support the public shooting sports community and expand awareness of shooting sports opportunities.
  • Work with heavy equipment and perform additional duties as assigned.
