This position will conduct the educational living history program at the one-room Stach School on the grounds of the Kansas Museum of History. This position plays the part of a 1920s schoolteacher, dressing in period clothing. The Museum Teacher conducts lessons as students also study on their own, much like a one-room school would have operated. The Museum Teacher follows a script loosely, and lessons are provided. The school has no electricity and is heated by a coal stove. Starting the fire is not the responsibility of this position, however, stoking it and closing the flue at end of the day is part of the Museum Teacher's duties. The four-hour program begins in the museum lobby as the Museum Teacher gives an orientation to students. Then students visit restrooms before walking the trail to the Stach School. The Museum Teacher exits the museum back door and drives to the school to greet students when they arrive. Math, recitation, reading, and a spelling bee are included. Students get a real feel for what life was like in 1920. This program takes place Tuesdays through Fridays, mostly during the school year. Hours are usually between 9am and 2pm. On a limited basis, the Museum Teacher may be asked to participate in special events held at the Museum occasionally.
