About The Position

Nebraska State Historical Society, NSHS, at the Fort Robinson History Center is seeking an individual primarily focused in providing living history interpretation and assist in the historical tours around Fort Robinson. Not only does this position require an in-depth knowledge of Fort Robinson, late nineteenth century military history/Great Plains Indian Wars, the American West and Westward Expansion, but also being able to share these histories in a first-person living history capacity. This includes, wearing historically accurate uniforms and clothing during tours and while stationed at one of a dozen historical buildings for our visitors. Requirements

  • Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Attention to detail is a must.

Nice To Haves

  • High School graduate and experience with customer service OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning or areas related to Nebraska history, geography or culture.
  • Knowledge of, or desire to learn, Nebraska's history, culture and the western United States.
  • Ability to interact with the public professionally, work well with people of all ages and abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills, outgoing and friendly personality.

Responsibilities

  • Provide enthusiastic and energetic historical tours in cooperation with the Nebraska Game & Parks.
  • Communicate various histories and stories while stationed at various Fort Robinson NSHS historical buildings in period accurate clothing.
  • Being able to quickly learn, adapt, and utilize research-based material about Fort Robinson history and other related subjects.
  • Greet people at the different NSHS historical locations at the Fort Robinson History Center and around the fort grounds.
  • Collect admissions and sells merchandise in the gift shop, providing excellent customer service.
  • Assist in stocking and maintaining merchandise on the sales floor and communicates when products are low.
  • Balance and prepare daily sales reports and other essential reports using POS systems.
  • Assist with custodial duties and other light regular housekeeping duties.
  • Performs other duties assigned within the scope of the classification.
