About The Position

The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is seeking a Tour Assistant for the Alcatraz Night Tour and Alcatraz Behind the Scenes tour for a project-term limited position from mid-February 2026 through early November 2026. This is a 40-hour per week project term-limited position with benefits. This position is an excellent pathway for openings within the Alcatraz Night Tour as an Historical Interpreter as well as a great starting point for a National Park Service Ranger career. The work schedule during the training period in mid-February until early March is Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-7pm. From early March through early November 2026, the work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, 2:10-9:45 pm and includes any holidays that fall within the schedule, excluding July 4th. Holiday work is paid at double time .

Requirements

• Excellent customer service skills
• Good public speaking skills
• Genuine desire to work daily with large numbers of park visitors from all around the world
• Willingness to work flexibility and cooperatively as part of a team
• Demonstrated history of excellent attendance record at past jobs
• Willingness to wear a Parks Conservancy uniform
• Minimum of high school diploma or GED

Responsibilities

• Welcome guests arriving on Alcatraz for the Behind the Scenes Tour and the Night Tour
• Accompany guests and tour leader on 1.5-2 hour Behind the Scenes Tours, ensuring visitor safety and comfort and protection of Island’s natural and cultural resources
• Answer visitor questions about tour experience and Island history while walking around the island or at assigned indoor or outdoor locations
• Deliver live boat narrations about Alcatraz history for visitors coming to the Night Tour
• Deliver cell door demonstrations and/or short programs about Island history when sufficiently knowledgeable (training and coaching provided)
• Assist National Park Service and visitors in medical/emergency situations (no medical training necessary)
• Other duties as assigned
