About The Position

The Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Scientist position at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency involves overseeing the development of TMDL studies aimed at restoring Minnesota's lakes and rivers. This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to address complex water quality issues, utilizing data analysis and innovative problem-solving techniques to inform strategic decisions and improve water resource management across the state.

Requirements

  • Two years of advanced professional-level environmental protection or pollution control experience.
  • Working knowledge of water resource concerns, hydrology, and water pollution control science and technology.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead groups of watershed stakeholders with diverse memberships.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, collaboration, technical writing, and planning/organization skills.
  • Ability to independently write scientific water quality reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with water quality models and their application in watershed management.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of watershed management principles and practices such as limnology and stream ecology.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete projects related to water quality restoration.
  • Knowledge of water quality standards and designated uses.
  • Experience writing TMDLs, WRAPS, or equivalent water quality analysis reports.
  • Proficient in Geographic Information System (GIS) software and programming languages like Python and R.
  • Experience and training related to Tribal-State Relations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to tackle complex water quality projects throughout the State.
  • Conduct investigations on the protection and restoration of lakes and streams using available tools and data.
  • Collect, analyze, and synthesize environmental data to inform strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with local, county, state, tribal, and federal governments to solve water quality problems and develop reports and studies.
  • Expand technical and subject matter expertise through project-based experiences.
  • Communicate findings to stakeholders, translating complex data into clear, actionable insights.
