The Machinist 2 position involves planning, laying out, and performing machining operations using manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, and CNC mills. The role includes performing bench work to construct, alter, and repair molds, fixtures, jigs, and assembly machines, with repairs made by copying broken parts, from verbal instructions, and from concept drawings. The machinist will work from complicated drawings, sketches, handbook formulas, and specifications, and in the absence of design drawings, will proceed from verbal instructions and/or concept drawings. The position requires performing complex machining and grinding operations that necessitate frequent improvising and adaptations of machines and tools. The machinist will also create Solid Works models and programs for the plate fabrication department as needed, assist with the setup of molds, maintain and repair plastic injection molds to support production, and build, design, and maintain tools for production while instructing others on their use and care.

  • Perform other duties as required.
  • A minimum of four years of similar toolmaking experience as an apprentice toolmaker or combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of CNC Mill set-up and programming.
  • Requires a very high degree of precision tolerances at times less than .001.
  • Must possess specific certifications as defined by site operations.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of machine operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of product quality issues.
  • In-depth knowledge of GDT.
  • In-depth knowledge of programs, macros, and cam software.
  • Ability to recognize errors in the g code and make edits prior to machining.
  • Ability to set up, operate, calibrate and maintain machines and tools.
  • Ability to recognize and address problems in the production process.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members and lead the team to high quality production within tight deadlines.
