About The Position

The Toolmaker position at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia is responsible for the fabrication and repair of jigs, fixtures, special tooling, and blanking dies essential for machine shop operations. This role requires precision in setting up and operating various machine tools while adhering to strict tolerances. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic environment that operates on a 24-hour basis, requiring flexibility in shift assignments.

Requirements

  • Experience fabricating jigs and fixtures and overhauling and repairing die sets under normal supervision.
  • Ability to operate machine tools and apply technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to use shop drawings and perform measurement and layout tasks.
  • Knowledge of materials used in tooling and machining.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate jigs, fixtures, and special tooling, and construct metal blanking dies.
  • Maintain carbide and tool steel dies for domestic and foreign coinage and medal dies by repairing and regrinding.
  • Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to very close tolerances (i.e., turret and engine lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, etc.).
  • Plan and lay out work according to blueprints, sketches, specifications, or samples to exact tolerances (0.0001).
  • Diagnose, dismantle, and correct problems with machinery by making necessary repairs.
