About The Position

The Machinist 2 position involves planning, laying out, and performing machining operations using manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, and CNC mills. The role includes performing bench work to construct, alter, and repair molds, fixtures, jigs, and assembly machines. Repairs are made by copying broken parts, following verbal instructions, and using concept drawings. The machinist will work from complicated drawings, sketches, handbook formulas, and specifications, and in the absence of design drawings, will proceed from verbal instructions and/or concept drawings. The machinist is responsible for organizing and determining work procedures and sequences, selecting materials in accordance with specifications, and performing complex machining and grinding operations requiring unusual setups. The role also includes creating Solid Works models and programs for the plate fabrication department as needed.

Requirements

  • A minimum of four years of similar toolmaking experience as an apprentice toolmaker or a combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of CNC Mill set-up and programming.
  • Requires a very high degree of precision tolerances at times less than .001.
  • Must possess specific certifications as defined by site operations.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of machine operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of product quality issues.
  • In-depth knowledge of GDT.
  • In-depth knowledge of programs, macros, and CAM software.
  • Ability to recognize errors in the G code and make edits prior to machining.
  • Ability to set up, operate, calibrate, and maintain machines and tools.
  • Ability to recognize and address problems in the production process.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members and lead the team to high-quality production within tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Work from complicated drawings, sketches, handbook formulas, and specifications.
  • Organize and determine work procedures and sequences in the absence of design drawings.
  • Perform complex machining and grinding operations requiring unusual setups.
  • Perform critical bench operations involving polishing, fitting, and aligning component parts.
  • Create Solid Works models and programs for the plate fabrication department.
  • Assist with the setup of molds and maintain and repair plastic injection molds.
  • Build, design, and maintain tools for production and instruct others on their use.
  • Proceed on work assignments with minimum supervision and direction.
  • Responsible for quality of workmanship, dimensional accuracy, and efficient operation of assigned projects.
  • Keep facilities, materials, and work area clean and organized.
  • Use safety practices and take prompt action to correct problems.
  • Assist co-workers to meet work unit goals.
  • Actively seek continuous improvement opportunities.
  • May be required to train other employees and assist in orientation of new employees.
  • Perform other duties as required and may be utilized in other areas and departments.
