Job purpose Create precision parts and assemblies to meet engineering and production requirements by performing a variety of machining practices with limited supervision. The Tool Room Machinist has a safety-first mindset, basic knowledge of measurement tools, and the desire to learn new things. A machinist can hold moderate tolerances using manual machines like lathes, mills, and surface grinders. Blueprint reading, manual sketching, and basic computer skills are part of the daily activities. The ability to work alone or with a team is required

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical Know How: Ability to measure with micrometers, calipers and other precision measurement devices. The ability to read blue prints and assembly prints.
  • Mathematics up to and including the fundamentals of trigonometry
  • Training: Basic operating knowledge of precision machining equipment.
  • Decision Making/Accountability: The Machinist works in an environment that requires limited supervision, periodic guidance of others, and the latitude to deviate on Tool Room practices and procedures. Review of work results is usually after the fact.
  • Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Relationship usually involves discussion and/or recommendations on issues regarding machining practices. Impact is considerable and may be limited to an individual project, department, or could possibly affect the facility as a whole.
  • Physical/Mental/Visual: The Machinist performs work with a high mental application and close visual attention required for extended periods of time with the possibility of exposure to hazardous conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Machine maintenance experience
  • Welding and fabricating skills preferred

Responsibilities

  • The person will be accountable for inspecting their own parts and reporting any discrepancies from the blueprint.
  • Applicants should be comfortable holding tolerances of +/-0.01” (.25mm) for basic shapes on a lathe and milling machine.
