About The Position

The Tool & Prototype Maker is responsible for supporting overall shop operations, including preventive maintenance, equipment repair, and prototype development. This role focuses on building precision tools, engineered prototype parts, and manufacturing aids such as jigs, molds, dies, and fixtures used in production processes. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with CNC machining, tooling design, and a variety of materials including metals, plastics, alloys, and ceramics.

Requirements

  • 2-year vocational/technical training preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on toolmaking or prototype experience
  • At least 3 years of CNC programming experience (3-axis and 5-axis) using CAM software or G-code
  • Experience with the following equipment preferred: Amada Coma Turret Punch Press, Amada Press Brake, Hurco Machining Centers, Mitsubishi Wire EDM
  • Strong knowledge of speeds, feeds, and tooling applications
  • Ability to program and operate CNC mills, lathes, and EDM machines
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, Mastercam preferred)
  • Experience creating detailed models, patterns, and drawings for new product development
  • Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills
  • Advanced knowledge of tooling, fixture, prototype, and mold building
  • Expertise in precision inspection tools and techniques
  • In-depth understanding of materials and their machining properties
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proactive mindset with strong organizational skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, production-driven environment

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily Tool & Prototype Shop operations in accordance with internal procedures and safety standards
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to plan and execute fabrication of tools, dies, and assemblies
  • Manufacture, assemble, repair, and modify tooling including jigs, fixtures, gauges, and dies
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, gauge blocks, etc.)
  • Design and create templates, jigs, and work aids to support efficient production
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and perform repairs on manual and progressive dies
  • Operate CNC equipment and utilize programming (CAM or G-code) for machining operations
  • Work with internal teams and external partners to resolve production and tooling issues
  • Select appropriate materials based on machining, heat treatment, welding, and wear requirements
  • Perform finishing work (filing, grinding, polishing) to ensure proper fit and quality
