About The Position

The Tool Maker / Technician will analyze specifications, set up and operates machine tools, fits and assemble parts to fabricate components for cutting-edge custom automated manufacturing equipment. Equipment includes machined components, fabricated parts, and purchased parts such as: robotics, vision systems, pick & place mechanisms, feeders, indexing dials, conveyors, custom drill/tap heads, and custom tooling.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Prefer four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Proficiency in CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all tool room equipment proficiently including CNC Lathes, Millers, grinders, Bridgeport, manual lathe, grinders.
  • Work with engineers to help develop custom solutions to difficult mechanical problems.
  • Design and fabricate proof-of-concept mock-ups to prove out new concepts and dial-in operating parameters.
  • Study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions to determine materials required and machines to be used.
  • Calculate dimensions, plan layout, and determine assembly method and sequence of operations.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, jig borer, job grinders, grinder and honing machine.
  • Smooth flat and contoured surfaces with power grinders, and fit and assemble parts into assemblies and mechanisms.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
  • Heat treat tools and parts.
  • Braise and weld (MIG and TIG a plus) parts.
  • Perform metal fabrication - working with sheet metal.
  • Examine standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommend design modifications.
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draw or sketch design of product.
  • Lift machine parts and position and secure parts on surface plate or worktable.
  • Occasional involvement in alignment and fabrication of components on custom automation built in house.
  • Travel may be required to support field service at other Hubbell facilities.
