About The Position

Are you looking for a challenge that will allow you to showcase your tool and die skills in a clean, climate controlled, manufacturing environment? As a Tool and Die Maker at Lucas Milhaupt you will use blueprints to determine project specifications, set up and operate stamping machine tools, finish, and adjust parts, and test tools to ensure quality standards are met to support the needs of our internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of machining techniques, CAD software, and blueprint reading.
  • Proficiency in operating manual and CNC machines and using precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex tooling and production issues.
  • High level of accuracy in producing parts and inspecting finished products.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and other team members.
  • Capability to handle manual work, lift heavy tools, and stand for extended periods.
  • Strong understanding of math concepts, including geometry, algebra, and trigonometry, to calculate dimensions and tolerances.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED), with completion of an apprenticeship program or relevant vocational training in tool and die making.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar role, or successful completion of an apprenticeship program

Responsibilities

  • Safety and Quality Control: Adhere to all safety standards and protocols in the workplace.
  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure that all parts meet specifications and are free of defects.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring that tools, dies, and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
  • Collaboration and Problem-Solving: Work closely with engineers, machinists, and production staff to meet production requirements.
  • Address design issues and recommend improvements to tools and processes.
  • Troubleshoot and provide solutions for production delays caused by tooling failures or defects.
  • Tool and Die Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on tools and dies to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot issues with tooling and equipment, identifying and correcting problems before they affect production.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret technical blueprints, schematics, and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings.
  • Translate design specifications into workable products or tools.
  • Measure and verify dimensions using precision instruments like micrometers, calipers, and gauges.

  • Machining: Use manual and computer-controlled (CNC) machines to cut, grind, and shape metal components.
  • Operate lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine tools to create components with precise dimensions.
  • Set up and operate advanced machinery such as Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machines), CNC machines, and surface grinders. Tool and Die Fabrication: Design and fabricate dies, molds, tools, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes.
  • Create prototypes and sample parts to ensure that tools and dies function as intended.
  • Modify and repair existing tools and dies to improve performance or adapt to new specifications.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on new technologies, techniques, and materials in the tool and die industry.
  • Recommend improvements to tools and processes to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
