We are looking for a Tool Design Engineer Apprentice to join the team at our Norridge, IL location. The Norridge location of NSI is a progressive manufacturer of die castings that has been in business for 50+ years and we look forward to having you join our team! Please note, this is a full-time, 1st shift position (7am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday). General Summary Accountable for providing high quality mold design with drawings and all relevant information in a timely and cost-efficient manner working together in a team environment. Ensure mold details are designed with minimum machine time requirements, while maximizing tool performance. Back up to Process Engineer for generating new part and sample part routers Responsible for the tool correction cycle Assist Tool Engineering in updating tool design and review and/or amend tool drawings to reflect final tool Assist Tool Design Engineer or Customer Service/Program Manager, as needed Design molds using Solidworks and Cimatron Ensure design is appropriate for programming in Cimatron Handle piece part engineering Work with Process Engineering Manager on different styles of gates best suited for part to be made Make design changes and revision changes, as necessary Utilize and complete design checklist Backflush designs, as needed Initiate the tool correction process Plan for a verification of the steel prior to correction Document necessary tool corrections in a timely manner Generate and explain tool repairs/maintenance tickets to necessary personnel and subcontractors Work with Tool Room Manager and tool room team, as needed Work closely with Customer Service/Program Manager and Sr. Director of Casting Operations to communicate design concerns Participate in tool design review with production, engineering and tooling Consult on quotes for new jobs or job revisions Participate with customers and engineering in “Design for Manufacturability” team functions and work to rectify any design concerns Work with Setup team on the production floor Document the tool design review meeting action items and changes Document engineering changes request from internal and external customers Maintain the file structure appropriate to Engineering Department standards Organize and file all tool drawings and tool specification documentation in either written or electronic format Compose and/or update tooling design procedures such that ISO and customer requirements are met Compose and/or update Hanna Cylinder Database and the Shanks Database Work with Tool Room Manager through the milestones laid out in the apprentice program Complete core competencies with supervisor as milestones are reached Maintain a log to track hours for each milestone
