About the Role: The Apprenticeship Program is a four-year program, in partnership with San Diego City College and the State of California Apprenticeship council. The Tool and Die Maker Apprentice will learn how to plan the sequence of operations, layout, develop, fabricate, assemble, rework, and prove tool dies, jigs and fixtures. At the end of successfully completing the Tool and Die Maker apprenticeship program, the employee will be promoted to a Tool and Die Maker (40325).

Requirements

  • All candidates must be at least 18 years old and eligible to enroll as a student with San Diego City College.
  • Additionally, candidates must have one of the following:
  • Diploma through G.E.D. issued by a high school
  • Certificate of High School Equivalency issued by a State Board of Education
  • Certification of High School Proficiency issued by a State Board of Education
  • Completion of 15 units of college courses from an accredited college with grades of "C" or better

Responsibilities

  • Work with Tool and Die Maker’s to learn how to w ork from tool design prints, sketches, and/or engineering information and/or utilize standard shop practice/procedure to produce and repair tools, fixtures, and special guiding and holding devices to support production requirements.
  • Be instructed on how to perform finishing tasks, such as filing, grinding, and polishing.
  • Investigate problems attributed to faulty tooling, check tools and/or materials to determine root cause and collaborate with cognizant personnel.
  • Spend a certain number of hours learning how to set-up and operate various machine tools for the machining of tools, dies and fixtures.
  • Perform housekeeping duties and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Understand and practice all current safety requirements and use of personal protective equipment in the shop environment.
  • Be instructed on how to i nvestigate, analyze and resolve tooling issues in m anufacturing.
  • Apprentices are required to complete a training program of four years (8,000 hours) of on-the-job training with qualified Journeymen.
  • Must attend related training classes for at least five hours per week until completion of the required courses. These courses provide supplemental knowledge related to the offered trades and is unpaid time.
  • At the end of their Apprenticeship, apprentices are expected to perform the role of a Tool and Die Maker (40325)
