The Toll Collector works directly under the supervision of the Tolling Shift Supervisor. This role is responsible for processing and regulating vehicles entering and exiting the Skyway through expeditious collection of money from motor vehicles in the payment of established toll fees. Toll Collectors follow procedural guidelines and regulations in the determination of and the collection of tolls. Independent judgment is necessary to resolve such problems as unusual occurrences arising in the traffic lanes. Errors could result in a substantial loss of time to the organization as the employee, supervisor, or affiliated banks locate and reconcile discrepancies. A substantial inconvenience to the public could also occur due to the incumbent misadvising motorist on available routes and current road conditions. Work is usually performed inside a toll booth with exposure to inclement weather conditions, noise and fumes. Incumbent must stand for long periods of time while processing traffic and turning and reaching when handing cash and returning change to customers. Physical effort and ability to walk between traffic lanes to change toll booth assignments or assist customers in I-Pass or Express lanes as necessary based on traffic needs. Incumbent is sometimes under a great deal of stress, typically when the traffic volume increases substantially. Good manual dexterity for operating a lane terminal is also recommended.
