About The Position

The Toll Collector works directly under the supervision of the Tolling Shift Supervisor. This role is responsible for processing and regulating vehicles entering and exiting the Skyway through expeditious collection of money from motor vehicles in the payment of established toll fees. Toll Collectors follow procedural guidelines and regulations in the determination of and the collection of tolls. Independent judgment is necessary to resolve such problems as unusual occurrences arising in the traffic lanes. Errors could result in a substantial loss of time to the organization as the employee, supervisor, or affiliated banks locate and reconcile discrepancies. A substantial inconvenience to the public could also occur due to the incumbent misadvising motorist on available routes and current road conditions. Work is usually performed inside a toll booth with exposure to inclement weather conditions, noise and fumes. Incumbent must stand for long periods of time while processing traffic and turning and reaching when handing cash and returning change to customers. Physical effort and ability to walk between traffic lanes to change toll booth assignments or assist customers in I-Pass or Express lanes as necessary based on traffic needs. Incumbent is sometimes under a great deal of stress, typically when the traffic volume increases substantially. Good manual dexterity for operating a lane terminal is also recommended.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED. or equivalent experience
  • 1–2 years of experience in a customer-facing or cash-handling role
  • Certifications/licenses required by law or regulation
  • Prior toll collection, cashier, or customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with electronic toll collection systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Positive outgoing personality with the ability to remain courteous with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to effectively respond and make expedient decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow money handling procedures.
  • General knowledge of the roads surrounding the area to give accurate directions to motorists when requested.
  • Ability to complete various forms and reports with completeness and accuracy.
  • Ability to make change rapidly and accurately.
  • Dependability and integrity in handling company funds
  • Ability to effectively use SCC applicable systems and tools to carry out responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Deliver excellent customer service by assisting motorists courteously and professionally
  • Monitors safety and security issues and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Reports to authorities all tolls collected with complete and accurate input of transactions
  • Follows prescribed procedures in the opening, operating, and closing vehicle traffic lanes
  • Collect tolls and provide change accurately, ensuring proper vehicle classification and axle counts.
  • Count and verify cash drawer totals at the beginning and end of shifts
  • Signify the proper class rate and axle count for each customer
  • Deposits cash, and reports in the appropriate toll plaza safe
  • Prepares various daily reports and forms; and posted in their designated area.
  • Ensures that the traffic lane is clear of obstructions, when logging in and out of the computer terminal. Follows prescribed procedures for emergency lane use, oversized vehicles, and other unusual occurrences
  • Liquidates correctly at the end of shift.
  • Takes immediate action to resolve problems; unpaid tolls, misclassification of vehicles, credit card and charge vehicles, and various other unusual occurrences that may arise in an exit lane
  • Advises motorists on available routes and current road conditions
  • Properly enters vehicle classification and additional information into the computer lane terminals
  • Responsible for assisting customers with swiping credit card outside.
  • Respond and make expedient decisions in emergency situations.
  • Assist customers who experience problems with electronic tolling.
  • Performs other duties as required.
