What We Offer This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. This position will work an estimated 10 - 15 hours per week. The pay rate for this position is $19.29. This position is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. Location This position works mostly in the field, at various locations around Denver. There will be occasional in-office hours, which will be at 101 W. Colfax Ave. What You’ll Do The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is the City’s accredited public health agency, promoting healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment through education, engagement, and enforcement. The department is funded by the General Fund, Enterprise Funds, Special Revenue Funds, and a mix of state, federal, and private grants and donations. The Community & Behavioral Health (CBH) Tobacco Team has an opening for a Youth Tobacco Operative to assist in conducting undercover inspections for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of twenty-one (21). This position will work with the FDA Field Team that includes the FDA-credentialed Investigator and the Tobacco Operative Chaperon while also working with the Local Tobacco Compliance & Enforcement team that includes the Local Tobacco Investigator. Specifically, as the Youth Tobacco Operative you will: Conduct compliance inspections of tobacco retailers. Complete paperwork detailing inspection. Travel via car for several hours with a county representative. Attend trainings and workshops as needed. Develop acceptable work habits and behaviors required in a structured work environment. Perform work procedures related to the assigned work area. Along with all department staff, this position will actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies. Additional training commensurate with assigned duties will be provided. Other duties as assigned. Ability and willingness to travel to retail locations, which includes traveling in a car for several hours at a time as part of the inspection process. Must be able to attend trainings and workshop as required. Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in a variety of situations. Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action even in uncertain situations to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
