About The Position

The MUSC Tobacco Treatment Program at the Hollings Cancer Center is seeking to hire a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS). The TTS will be responsible for providing proactive telehealth counseling services to Hollings Cancer Center patients. The candidate will provide comprehensive assessment of tobacco use history, develop personalized quit plans, deploy behavioral therapies and practical counseling, and connect the patient with prescription cessation medications as needed. Candidates with experience in health education or counseling are preferred, especially if they already have knowledge of nicotine addiction science, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing, and tobacco cessation medications. The Tobacco Treatment Program will provide training as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS), and the individual is expected to acquire and maintain certification as a TTS practitioner. Must be flexible with work hours given patient availability and have the ability to think creatively and independently, as well as demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates with experience in health education or counseling are preferred, especially if they already have knowledge of nicotine addiction science, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing, and tobacco cessation medications.
  • Understanding nicotine addiction science is preferred.
  • Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing is preferred.
  • Knowledge of tobacco cessation medications and NRT is preferred.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and non-judgmental support skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Computer skills.
  • At least two years’ relevant program experience in health behavior counseling is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based support, education, and treatment planning for tobacco treatment services to patients identified as tobacco users in MUSC Hollings Cancer Center clinics, providing phone based and follow-up counseling services.
  • Develop personalized quit plans for patients and deploy behavioral therapies.
  • In collaboration with clinic pharmacists, deploy treatment interventions, including nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) and prescription medications.
  • Track patient progress through follow-up calls and refer to other available services (SC Quitline, pharmacy for prescription medications).
  • Work with staff towards sustainability of the program through identifying methods that can be incorporated in the cessation services using EPIC and TelASK to chart results of counseling and medications provided.
  • Work with other components and staff of the Tobacco Treatment Program to facilitate referring patients for research studies when warranted.
