About The Position

An employee in this class announces the opening of court and performs various duties which facilitate the courtroom proceedings. The individual selected for this position may be assigned to either the Juvenile Branch or Domestic Relations Branch of Family Court, and may be reassigned to either Branch, as business needs might require. The Tipstaff performs entry-level escort, announcement and ceremonial work in a court of law for the purpose of ensuring courtroom decorum, compliance to courtroom procedures, and the facilitation of the overall functioning of the court during legal activities. Requirements

  • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, courtroom needs and techniques, procedures, rules and regulations relating to court proceedings and operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral directions
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, attorneys, associates, and the general public.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the characteristics required to perform the essential functions of the class may substitute for those listed.
  • Satisfactory clearance of a criminal background investigation.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of a position in this class.
  • Must work on site (not remote).

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the courtroom prior to the beginning of proceedings.
  • Open court by reciting standard announcements.
  • Swears in witnesses.
  • Marks and records exhibits.
  • Provides limited courtroom security.
  • Checks bags and packages of persons entering courtroom.
  • Verifies that emergency phones are working.
  • Ensures that newspapers are kept out of the courtroom.
  • Assures the integrity of the proceedings.
  • Assures that all parties required for the proper conduct of the trial are present.
  • Maintains all necessary records as indicated by current courtroom procedures.
  • Carries out the orders of the Judge.
  • Answers the telephone or may greet callers.
  • Provides general information pertaining to assigned function.
  • Replenishes computer printer, copier or fax machine paper supplies.
  • Performs related work as required.
