About The Position

The Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 position is a full-time role focused on the maintenance, repair, and reconstruction of infrastructure managed by the New York State Thruway Authority. The role involves operating construction equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and providing guidance to team members. This position is essential for ensuring the integrity and functionality of various structures, including pavements, bridges, and toll plazas.

Requirements

  • One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1;
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and six months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles and twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair;
  • A valid Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, or ironwork related to bridge construction or repair.
  • Certification for applying herbicides and pesticides.

Responsibilities

  • Engages in the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of infrastructure, including pavements, shoulders, parking areas, facilities, toll plazas, medians, right-of-way, bridge decks, retaining walls, piers, fascia, abutments, culverts, water control and other structures and appurtenances.
  • Operates maintenance and construction equipment and vehicles involved in snow and ice control and other activities and uses a two-way radio.
  • Adheres to safety rules, work rules, maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Reports observed maintenance needs to supervisor and performs spot maintenance, including removal of nuisance objects.
  • Performs traffic control activities.
  • Serves as a team leader and provides direction, guidance, instruction and training to others.
  • Maintains daily records of work performed and materials used.
  • With appropriate certification, may apply herbicides and pesticides, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
