At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, contributing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. You will work directly with NASA as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the system that will return humans to the Moon, this time to stay. You will be a Thermal Analysis Engineer III within the Thermal Product Team. You will be responsible for performing and leading thermal analysis projects at system-level for our lunar landers during ground, launch, Earth orbit, cis-lunar space, lunar orbit, and lunar surface mission phases. Contribute to a team of Thermal Engineers simultaneously developing groundbreaking lunar landers. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

  • Focus on system-level analysis of the lunar lander
  • Own the delivery and quality of thermal analysis of the spacecraft system including when interfacing with other vehicles
  • Build thermal models in Thermal Desktop/Sinda based on system inputs from external teams
  • Integrate submodels from multiple contributing thermal analysts into a detailed system model
  • Maintain submodel build requirements documentation to ensure consistent modeling approach across submodels and seamless integration into the system model
  • Set up orbits/heating rates and case sets to cover analysis of all mission phases
  • Develop logic blocks to model components of the thermal control architecture
  • Predict spacecraft component temperatures and heater power across all mission phases
  • Perform model checks to ensure the accuracy and quality of results
  • Identify non-compliances to thermal requirements and drive them to resolution
  • Perform trade studies and optimizations of thermal design solutions and collaborate with external teams on the trade offs
  • Document thermal analysis results and present at internal review boards and program gated reviews
  • Maintain and enforce model version control process to ensure proper review and consistent model use for generating thermal predictions
  • Maintain a simplified system model to perform analysis trade studies requiring quick turnaround times.
  • Ensure consistency between detailed and simplified models
  • Perform model validation by correlating to test data
  • Lead and mentor early-career analysis engineers
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 5 years of relevant Thermal Analysis experience using Thermal Desktop/Sinda
  • Established understanding of heat transfer fundamentals in space environment
  • Good understanding of common spacecraft thermal hardware
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation process
  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 7 years of relevant Thermal Analysis experience
  • Strong understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, etc and semi-passive devices like sensors and heaters
  • Familiar with thermal environments of lunar missions
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in application
  • Expert in Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint
  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
