This temporary role offers flexibility and can be performed onsite at our Advanced Technologies office in Lynchburg, VA, remotely, or as a hybrid position. BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. Please note that this is a temporary position intended to support project needs over a 6-month timeframe.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or physics is required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in engineering is required.
  • Must have a strong understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
  • Must possess a technical background in mechanical engineering design, fluid systems, thermodynamics, and process instrumentation.
  • Must be proficient with standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to self-direct with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DOE or DOD security clearance is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Update an existing thermal/fluid model and generate a report on the results.
  • Modify and enhance pre-existing thermal/fluid models to reflect the updated design parameters.
  • Run simulations to evaluate system-level thermal performance.
  • Interpret and analyze results to identify trends, deviations, and design implications.
  • Prepare a detailed technical report summarizing the modeling approach.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure model accuracy and alignment with system design objectives.
