About The Position

Francis W. Parker School is a renowned JK-12th grade independent day school. Founded in 1901 on the tenets of progressive education, the School currently enrolls 940 students and employs 200 dedicated faculty and staff members who, in addition to assistant teachers, substitute teachers and coaches, work together to ensure that the School lives up to its Mission to educate students to think and act with empathy, courage and clarity as responsible citizens and leaders in a diverse, democratic society and global community. We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Theatrical Design Instructor specializing in set design and construction, stagecraft, and production management. The Theatrical Design Instructor will collaborate with the Theatre & Technical Manager/Auditorium Manager, faculty, and students to bring productions to life through innovative set designs and effective production management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Theater Design, Fine Arts, or a related field required; advanced graduate degree strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in set design and construction, stagecraft, and managing theatrical productions.
  • Strong understanding of color theory, lighting techniques, and visual aesthetics.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with directors, producers, teachers, and students.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet quick deadlines, and manage multiple aspects of production simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Technical Theatre & Design
  • Lead the set design and construction process, ensuring sets are constructed safely and efficiently.
  • Create detailed design plans for sets, lighting, and props.
  • Collaborate with the director to design a fully thought out set design.
  • Oversee the execution of designs during rehearsals and performances, making adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Theatre & Technical Manager/Auditorium Manager, faculty, and students to develop and implement creative and functional set designs for productions.
  • Work closely with the director and the production team to ensure a cohesive and visually captivating production.
  • Coordinate with Woodshop teacher and Theatre & Technical Manager/Auditorium Manager to designate available space usage for scenic construction.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in set design and production management to bring innovative ideas to educational productions.
  • Demonstrate ones own cultural competency and incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion in personal practice.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and sound judgment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
