About The Position

The primary role of the Ruyle Art Collection Manager is to manage the facilities, registration duties, and operations of the Ruyle Art Collection. This part-time endowed staff position stewards the lifetime collection of artwork, as well as drafts, papers, and other archival matter including books, photos, and other materials from the estate of artist and educator Lydia Ruyle. This collection serves as a learning laboratory for curriculum in curatorial studies and public history. Cataloging, digitizing, and archiving are important aspects of this position as well as expanding interpretation, preservation, and educational aspects of the collection. There will be some supervision of interns, volunteers, and student employees associated with the galleries as well as opportunities to collaborate on exhibition installations. The Ruyle Collection Manager reports directly to the Director of the School of Arts and Design and works in dialog with the UNC Director of Galleries, PVA Event staff, and the Dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts.

Requirements

  • One year experience in an arts or cultural or historical organization with exhibitions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in registration, cataloging, and/or archival efforts in support of exhibitions and services.
  • Experience coordinating, planning, and installing a range of artwork.
  • Experience shipping and crating of fine art, and working with property loan contracts.
  • MA, M.F.A., or PhD that qualifies one to teach at a BA or MA level.
  • Experience in or ability to teach in museum/gallery studies.

Responsibilities

  • Catalog the entire Ruyle Art Collection including work in the Lydia and Robert Ruyle Gallery, the Lydia Ruyle study and research room in Guggenheim Hall, the UNC Library Archives, and any other Ruyle connected works that may be identified.
  • Work within UNC marketing parameters to create a website that shares information about Lydia Ruyle and her work including digitizing all of the artwork and cataloging materials in study and research room.
  • Manage and coordinate incoming and outgoing loans of the Ruyle Collection including preparing and processing loan and exhibition related contracts, planning and monitoring domestic and international.
  • Prepare and coordinate transit for loaned objects including shipping, packing, unpacking, transport and documentation.
  • Conduct Ruyle Collection exhibition installation and deinstallation.
  • Develop an annual budget along with the Director of the School of Art and Design and Director of Galleries in alignment with School, College, Foundations, and Institution’s strategic plan.
  • Contact and work closely with artists, community members, Foundations, and Ruyle family as appropriate regarding Ruyle related exhibitions.
  • Work with Ruyle associates and family as well as UNC legal and risk management to create a lending and loan system free of charge to recipients, funded by the Ruyle Endowment.
  • Work with students to research, collect data, compile information useful in sustaining the Ruyle Collection.
  • Work with PVA Communication Specialist and Galleries Director to keep materials and website up to date.
  • Send regular updates to faculty and students on gallery happenings along with calendar invitations. Send reminder emails of events.
  • Create collaborative connections with other departments in PVA and UNC as well as other institutions (public, private, community based, local, state, national level) to enhance the programs of the Galleries.
  • Engage meaningfully with donors to continue to build support for the Galleries.
  • Partner with area galleries, museums, cultural organizations, libraries, and other institutions to develop partnerships.
