About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable. As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will develop, manage, and oversee instrumentation planning efforts and data collection in support of qualification testing for various spaceflight structures and systems. You will be responsible for all aspects of sensor and harness planning and engineering, developing/integrating test control and data acquisition equipment, writing procedures and plans for instrumentation installation and checkout, and collecting/archiving test data to support vehicle checkouts and buildup. This role is primarily a combination of test instrumentation planning and equipment planning, design, documentation, and management, as well as developing/verifying interfaces between instrumentation and data collection systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 5+ years of related technical hands-on experience in the aircraft, spacecraft, automotive, or oil/gas industries.
  • Knowledge of sensor operation and theory for various measurement applications (pressure, strain, temperature, displacement, force, acceleration, etc.)
  • Experience developing/supporting acceptance and qualification test plans utilizing data acquisition, pressure controllers, environmental chambers, shock/vibration tables, etc.
  • Working knowledge of common data acquisition systems and hardware.
  • Familiar with electrical schematic and panel layout design using CAD.
  • Experience with data anomaly review, sensor system troubleshooting, and root cause analysis in a lab or test environment.
  • Experience developing, writing, and updating installation/checkout procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with instrumentation calibration and application of NIST standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with test and facilities engineers to develop instrumentation plans.
  • Develop and coordinate instrumentation requirements with customers.
  • Create and oversee instrumentation drawings, models, procedures, and other engineering artifacts.
  • Select components and equipment to verify interfaces with data collection equipment.
  • Design, integrate, and test custom and COTS hardware solutions.
  • Manage project aspects for sensors, harnesses, and related instrumentation hardware, including budget, schedule, cost management, and team coordination.
  • Participate in gated design and test reviews.
  • Support development, qualification, and acceptance testing to reduce program risk.
  • Develop procedures and software automation for instrumentation installation and testing.
  • Write and manage test/install/checkout procedures.
  • Support on-site instrumentation installation and checkouts (up to 30% travel).
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues during testing.
  • Assist in pre- and post-test sensor and data verification activities.
  • Reduce, analyze, and archive test data to support verification and qualification tasks.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
