About The Position

The Test Engineer position at Electric Boat is a full-time role located in Groton, CT, within the New Construction business unit. The D451 department is crucial in providing mission-ready submarines to the fleet through construction, testing, and post-shakedown support. Engineers in this department are responsible for planning, executing, and certifying work activities on submarines. The D451 team consists of five distinct groups that support submarine construction for the US Navy, including Reactor Plant Electrical, Non-Propulsion Electrical Engineering, Propulsion Plant Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Design & Test, and Facilities Engineering Support. The engineering team operates collaboratively, using a design-build approach to interface with various personnel and arrive at innovative solutions to complex problems. Interaction with the US Navy and other stakeholders is common, and strong communication skills are essential. The role may require travel and flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends, based on departmental needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 20+ years of experience working as a commercial/industrial electrician OR 10+ years of experience and an E2 Electrical Journeyman License issued by the State of CT or equivalent from another US State.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Experience with NFPA 79 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery.
  • Experience with UL508A Industrial Control Panels.
  • Experience with UL1558 and U891 Switchgear.
  • Experience with inspection and maintenance in accordance with InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) test program.
  • Experience with IEEE C2 National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Experience with commercial/industrial installations and inspections.
  • Experience with medium voltage underground campus power distribution and substations.
  • Familiarity with 46 CFR Chapter I Subchapter J Electrical Engineering and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) requirements for marine vessels.

Responsibilities

  • Design test equipment, including temporary power distribution to shipboard applications.
  • Evaluate existing shipyard facilities and recommend improvements for safety, reliability, and functionality.
  • Review and comment on drawings and specification documents for new electrical installations throughout the shipyard.
  • Support operations and maintenance of Electric Boat's floating assets.
