About The Position

A Terminal Yard Spotter is a person who drives tractor trailer trucks within a yard or space, hooks up trailers to tractors, unhooks trailers, and organizes trailers and tractors within a company's yard space. The greatest aspect of trailer spotting is the hostler or “yard mule” – the special tractor that moves and organizes fully-loaded semi-trailers around a freight yard or warehouse. The Yard Driver communicates and interacts with co-workers and vendors professionally ensuring all services and duties are executed in accordance with preferred work methods and customer service practices. Functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company.

Requirements

At least 23 years of age
Valid Non-expired Driver’s License or CDL Class A or B
(2) years of verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience in the last 5 years
(3) years DMV/MVR record with two or fewer moving violations/accidents
Must pass background and drug testing as required by federal and/or state department(s) of transportation regulations.

Responsibilities

Responsible to maintain a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the yard’s needs.
Operate Yard Truck in a safe manner during numerous roll-on/roll-off procedures daily involving loaded and empty containers.
Drive and operate vehicle under 15 mph in and around the terminal and storage lot/staging area.
Be cognizant of the reality that the operation is a low mileage severe duty function requiring particular attention to preventive maintenance checks and services as well as actual scheduled vehicle maintenance.
Must be aware that operations occur on asphalt, concrete and gravel surfaces in a hostile environment often contaminated with material subject to embedding in tires.
Responsible for accounting for records involving container numbers, and Trailer numbers.
Must function and interact daily with Yard/ Warehouse personnel and comply with plant safety requirements.
Communicate using cellular telephone or 2-way radio with dispatch, terminal, and Warehouse personnel.
Security of valuable commodities and the storage area itself are a major area of concern for the Yard Jockey, occasionally requiring guidance from supervisory personnel regarding disposition.
