Summary / Primary Role: Terminal Operations Manager is accountable for overall performance and growth of a freight forwarding terminal (e.g., warehousing, cross-dock, dedicated fleet, and last-mile). This role blends hands-on operational leadership with a field sales component, including regular visits to potential new customers and expanding business with current accounts. The Terminal Operations Manager ensures service excellence, cost discipline, safety compliance, and employee engagement while actively partnering with Sales in building a qualified sales pipeline.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in logistics/3PL operations (terminal, DC, cross-dock, or transportation) with 2+ years in people leadership.
  • Strong financial acumen (P&L, pricing levers, cost-to-serve, margin analysis).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proven ability to lead change, standardize processes, and deliver measurable improvements.
  • Excellent customer-facing communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to be Forklift Certified.

Responsibilities

  • Own and oversee all day-to-day terminal operations, including receiving, loading/unloading, staging, yard/dispatch, and overall service execution.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the workforce; ensure proper staffing, onboarding, training, and performance management.
  • Manage terminal-level operating expenses, including labor planning, overtime control, vendor management, and discretionary spend.
  • Establish and monitor team goals related to claims, and implement corrective action plans to reduce damages.
  • Utilize operational systems effectively and leverage reporting to manage and optimize daily business performance.
  • Drive KPI execution and accountability across all operational functions.
  • Ensure full compliance with company policies and applicable regulations (OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, HAZMAT, as applicable).
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve SOPs, work instructions, and standard work (including Kaizen and root-cause analysis initiatives).
  • Identify and execute process improvements to enhance efficiency, cost control, and productivity across dock, office, city, linehaul, and supervisory functions.
  • Lead full-cycle recruitment for terminal roles in partnership with HR and Talent Acquisition, including hiring, interviewing, selection, and onboarding.
  • Partner cross-functionally (Claims, Customer Service, Pricing, Safety, HR, Finance, Sales) to drive service excellence and workforce planning.
  • Oversee all timekeeping functions, including timecard approvals, attendance tracking, PTO management, and shift coverage planning.
  • Champion a safety-first culture across all terminal operations, ensuring adherence to OSHA, FMCSA, and company safety standards.
  • Ensure all employees meet DOT/FMCSA compliance requirements, including driver qualifications, HOS, vehicle inspections, and HAZMAT regulations (as applicable).
  • Conduct routine safety audits, yard inspections, and facility walk-throughs to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
  • Lead incident reporting, investigations, and root cause analysis, ensuring timely corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor and drive safety KPIs (TRIR, near-misses, corrective actions), holding teams accountable for continuous improvement.
  • Partner with the Safety team to maintain compliance with OSHA standards related to warehouse operations, forklifts, dock safety, and working conditions.
  • Ensure proper equipment maintenance and compliance, including pre-/post-trip inspections, preventive maintenance programs, and documentation.
  • Lead regular safety meetings, training sessions, and safety communications to reinforce expectations and awareness.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices in all operating and environmental conditions.
  • Ensure all equipment servicing and maintenance complies with company, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Prospect, qualify, and visit potential customers on a regular basis to build a strong pipeline aligned with terminal capacity and service capabilities.
  • Provide market intelligence to leadership, including pricing benchmarks, competitive landscape, and emerging 3PL/trucking activity.
  • Collaborate with the Pricing team to develop competitive, market-aligned pricing strategies.
  • Grow existing accounts through regular business reviews in coordination with Sales representatives.
  • Represent the company at local industry events, chambers of commerce, and networking forums to strengthen brand presence and generate new opportunities.
