About The Position

East Stroudsburg University's Department of English is looking for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor with a specialization and experience in teaching composition and professional writing courses. Secondary interests in multimodal composition, digital rhetoric, cultural rhetoric, and/or professional writing and editing are welcomed. Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU's proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. Just minutes from campus are the country's largest water parks, scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Appalachian Trail, and other opportunities for recreational fun. ESU's English Department offers several programs of study that lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as an additional program leading to a Master of Arts. The programs offer a comprehensive foundation of courses and serve as a lifetime resource for our students to excel in their future endeavors. We embrace a shared appreciation of great literature, and we nurture original, fresh, diverse voices. All of which are transferred into tools to help our students become expert communicators and creatively use various mediums to convey their powerful ideas. This is an entry-level, tenure-track, nine-month appointment which starts August 2025. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The search committee may request a writing sample during the application process.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric, Composition, Technical Writing, or related field by the time of appointment.
  • Active track record in scholarship, teaching, and service related to composition, rhetoric, or professional writing.
  • Teaching experience in college-level writing courses is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multilingual writers, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary programs is desirable.
  • Approaches to rhetoric outside the Western and/or European tradition are welcome and encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Carry a full teaching course load per academic year with a primary focus on general education writing courses (e.g., composition, advanced composition, workplace writing, etc.) with the possibility of some teaching in other areas depending on departmental need and instructor expertise.
  • Contribute to the English Department's goal of diversifying its course offerings in professional writing.
  • Maintain an active academic writing/research presence.
  • Advise students in majors and minors.
  • Serve on departmental and university-wide committees.
