Calvert County Department of Public Works; Water and Sewer Division is seeking a (Temporary) Water and Sewer Technician Trainee. The main function of this position will be to assist with anything Water Meter related. Some of the key responsibilities of this position include Reading Meters, Performing Meter Shut Offs, Final Reads on Meters, Meter Locates, Installations, and Replacements, Complete Work Orders (Document Time, Materials Used, and Task Performed), Organize and Inventory Warehouse, Respond to Customer Complaints, Assist Operations and Maintenance Staff on Routine and Emergency Repairs If Needed. Performs entry level water and sewer infrastructure work. Water and Sewer Technician Trainees perform inspections, exercise system valves, read meters, repair and replace meters, and respond to system emergencies and customer concerns. Work involves performing tasks intended to acquaint the worker with the principles and techniques of maintaining water and sewer facilities, associated infrastructure and equipment. Work is performed under close supervision. Essential Job Functions Assists in the performance of routine, preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance on water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems and associated equipment and infrastructure. Assists in the installation, repair, or replacement of water and sewer appurtenances. Assists in the inspection, troubleshooting, disassembly, cleaning, overhauling, rebuilding, or replacement of water and sewer infrastructure. Daily, completes work orders to accurately document time, materials used, and tasks performed. Reads water meters and assists in inspecting, repairing, and replacing water meters. Inspects gravity sewer manholes and grease interceptors. Performs water service turn-ons and turn-offs. Performs water system leak detection and leak correlation. Trains in the routine daily operation and use of all water and wastewater infrastructure equipment and tools. Utilizes proper safety procedures related to all work performed and maintains an awareness of changes in procedures. Performs maintenance on water and wastewater infrastructure and equipment according to the schedules and procedures established. Completes equipment check lists. Unloads chemicals and equipment. Organizes and inventories assigned warehouse area. Ensures work areas and County issued vehicle are kept clean and orderly at all times. Responds to customer complaints and water and sewer emergencies. Assists maintenance personnel in routine and emergency repairs. Exercises water and sewer system valves annually. Other Duties Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.) Knowledge of— General procedures of mechanical maintenance and operation. Ability to-- Learn to effectively maintain water and sewer infrastructure, tools and equipment. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Deal effectively with the public. Perform maintenance tasks using all required safety precautions. Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.) Training and/or Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: Six months of plumbing or mechanical maintenance experience. Licenses or Certificates: Valid driver's license. Must apply for temporary Maryland Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection 2 certifications at time of employment. To continue employment, must obtain traffic control certification and CPR/First Aid certification within the first six (6) months of employment. Special Requirements: Must be 18 years of age. Operation of County owned vehicle. Work location and work hours are subject to change to meet business objectives. Physical Demands: Requires medium to moderately heavy moving up to 50 pounds and lifting of equipment and use of hand and power tools. Work may be in confined spaces and may require the use of a ladder to access meters installed above ceilings. Requires routine standing, sitting, walking, crouching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing and/or balancing, using hands and arms to reach, grasp, finger and feel, ability to smell, taste, talk, hear, and differentiate colors. Unusual Demands: Workers are exposed to dirt and soil, sewage, chemicals and hazards of working around moving equipment and with power tools. May be required to work weekends and holidays. Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies.
