About The Position

The Undergraduate Research Assistant position is a temporary, full-time role focused on an NSF-funded project that investigates the genetics of urban evolution. Students will engage in both field and laboratory research, developing critical thinking skills in evolutionary biology and genomics while working closely with the Phifer-Rixey Lab. Participants will also receive professional development training and have opportunities for outreach activities, making this a comprehensive learning experience.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be majoring in Biology or a closely related field.
  • At least one year completed of a 2- or 4-year undergraduate program.
  • Must be continuing in an undergraduate program in the fall of 2024.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • High motivation for a career in scientific research.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in field and laboratory activities related to evolutionary genetics, including sampling and collecting trait data.
  • Extract nucleic acids from samples for analysis.
  • Conduct data analysis and present findings through oral and written communication.
  • Curate data and document all research activities and analyses.
  • Maintain laboratory and field supplies.
  • Assist with outreach and education activities.
  • Engage in professional development relevant to the project and career aspirations.
